Thea Farhadian Voices From Behind the Veil This sound piece incorporates interviews of Egyptian women on the subject of the hijab (the various head and bodily coverings of Islamic women) into a multi-lingual sound collage of voices, exploring the layers and complexity of this subject. The primary impetus of this project is the shift the (western) gaze from the stereotypical assumptions that are easily conjured by visual images of veiled women to an aural encounter where the women (both veiled and not veiled) speak for themselves. |
